Marilyn is comprised of John Baldessari’s gestural drawing over an appropriated portrait of Suzy Solidor by Francis Picabia. A chanteuse and owner of a chic Paris nightclub during the 1930’s, Solidor posed for portraits painted by many of the most celebrated artists of the time.
This print gets at the heart of Baldessari’s seminal works- where swaths of color re-inscribe an image as his own. This is the artist’s first collaboration with Multi Editions, a publisher of art multiples in Los Angeles.
John Baldessari is a preeminent artist who has been featured in hundreds of solo exhibitions and over a thousand group shows in the U.S. and internationally. He is the recipient of the 2014 National Medal of Arts Award. His oeuvre of unique works from 1956 – the present can be seen in the six volume, “John Baldessari Catalogue Raisonné…”, published by Yale University Press.
Recent and upcoming projects include exhibitions at Galerie Mai 36 in Zurich, Marian Goodman Gallery in New York and London, a design for the BMW Art Car, and set design for the Paris Opera.
